History of Our Ranch

Original
Barnyard Site

Kelly’s parents, Ken and Pat Callies, were born and raised in Alberta. Her father was raised just outside of Wetaskiwin, Alberta and her mother was born about 3 miles from where Aspen Hill Red Angus is situated today. Ken’s father had raised Black Angus cattle, Ken had raised Hereford cross commercial cattle and Pat’s family had had a mixed farm when she was younger. Both of them have rural roots that go very deep.

Breeding Stock Selection Criteria

In the early 1960’s, Ken and Pat purchased and homesteaded a quarter section of land that is now some of the primary grazing land for the Aspen Hill ranch. Kelly, along with her 4 sisters, grew up on that land. Kelly left home after high school to attend the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She received her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (1986), majoring in Animal Science specializing in Livestock Management. Along the way she met George, who had come east from New Brunswick during the first Alberta Oil Boom in the late 1970’s. George is originally from a small Acadian French community just outside of Moncton, New Brunswick. He is a journeyman Auto Body Mechanic with numerous other trades tickets in his resume. He is fluent in both French and English and his ancestors have been farming on the east coast for generations. Together, George and Kelly have built their purebred herd up to 150 breeding females and manage a land base of approximately 3000 acres.
